Everything to Know About WordPress 6.9: Features, Updates, and APIs

After April 2025, we got the new WordPress 6.9 version on 2nd December 2025. The new version exhibits user-friendly features, empowering developers to focus more on the display without coding or using a plugin.

As of now, WordPress is one step closer to providing a smooth experience for beginners. The introduction of the accordion block and enhanced API connectivity made this update a significant part.

What’s New in WordPress 6.9?

Some of the noticeable add-ons that have brought convenience and improvements are:

Block Level Notes

This new feature facilitates teamwork and seamless coordination, as it allows teams to leave feedback. Notes can be viewed, replied to, and resolved just like how it works with Google Docs. And authors also get notified via email to keep themselves updated.

To access this feature, click on the block and navigate to the three dots, click on add note to comment on the block.

Hides Block

Deleting the block and recovering it was a hectic thing to do. Something that developers might have faced in multiple scenarios. Now we have an option to hide the block, saving time and effort for developers during the testing phase.

Drag and Drop

Much-awaited feature is now live, enabling developers to drag and drop images, blocks, and other interactive elements. Now building the layout for the website is easier and intuitive, which gives you better control. Moreover, it is expected that the multiple drag and drop will be live by WordPress 7.0. 

New Block

The new block feature brings a lot of new elements, elevating the visual presentation game. Now on developers can add a distinct block for FAQs, maths formula, time to read, and block binding to external sources.

Apart from these newly introduced features, WordPress 6.9 also witnessed some of the major improvements that have facilitated easy content creation.

Comment

Earlier, this feature was not available for WordPress, but now developers can separate the comment count from the comment link. Giving the freedom to place the comment section wherever it seems most convenient for you.

Improvements in WordPress 6.9

As we deep dive into new, enticing improvements in WordPress, the new API ability allows us to interact with the AI integration. The new fit text features automatically stretch to the paragraph or heading block without scratching head on custom CSS.

 

Some of the additional improvements include:

• Developers can now apply a consistent gallery ratio across the layout with just a single click. No more usage of custom CSS here, too. 

• The Command Palette lets you navigate through the entire WordPress dashboard. To access, press Ctrl+K on Windows and Cmd+K on Mac.

• CSS padding style has now been fixed. Moreover, HTML outputs can be optimized to improve the site’s performance.

• With API automation workflow is enhanced, allowing developers to build complex automated tasks. 

• A new block_bindings_supported_attributes_{$block_type} enables developers to filter which block attributes can be connected to a custom data source.

• The interactive API was introduced in WordPress 6.5. With the new update, the interactive element and experience are now more immersive and provide real-time data.

• The best part about 6.9, you can now add specific IDs to the API.

• There has been a significant improvement in WP Cron. Previously, it caused random slowdown, which isn’t the case with the new version.

• Bug fixes like CSS issues, email not being sent, and broken navigation links have been fixed.

The new improvements also facilitate “DateCalendar” and “DateRange Calendar”, which allow integrating date range selection on a block. GroupByField makes it easy to group the data based on a field value.

The enhanced template management feature isn’t present with the update, but developers can access this functionality with the Gutenberg plugin. 

Fixes With WordPress 6.9

WordPress 6.9 went through three candidate updates from November 2025. The 2nd candidate update brought the actual refinements and fixes that were much needed to improve the experience. 

It includes:

• Resolving accessibility tickets
• Much clearer navigation
• You can now access tons of styles directly from the post editing screen. By enabling the show template menu.
•  Laid the foundation for API abilities.

The 3rd candidate update, which was updated on 25th November, included a last-minute fix:

• Consistency check
• Improved commenting experience
• Real-time collaboration process
• The new plugin, known as X3P0, acts as a media container. 
• WP Chat plugin lets you chat with your site visitors.

Moreover, there are tons of plugins that have been introduced that can make website development a seamless experience. With Affiliate WP, you can add reward or loyalty programs for your visitors.

What to Expect From WordPress 7.0?

With the WordPress 6.9 update, we saw a small but gradual step towards AI-driven tools. The possibility and scope suggest that we might get to witness much more of it.

However, take it with a grain of salt, as no such official synopsis for 7.0 got released. But the rumors are that it’s obvious that each update brings more mobile responsiveness and reduced loading time. The content-only editing feature and multiple block binding have also been moved to 7.0. 

As these feature was supposed to be in the core release, they were present in the Beta version but got removed due to some issue. It is also expected that the new breadcrumb for the blog website will be live by 2026.

The new 7.0 version might support better post-creation theme editing, allowing developers to make major tweaks without going to the editor page.
